7 Fun Science Experiments for Kids
Science is everywhere. One of the best things about doing experiments, is that it demonstrates a cause and effect, and how things work in the world in a hands-on way. This is important, because we know that kids learn through play, being creative and having fun. Here are 7 of our top science experiments for kids:
1. Jam Jar Xylophone – gather a collection of 6 jam jars and put them in a straight line. Fill one jar ¾ full and progressively fill the remaining five jars with less water. Using a spoon, tap on each jar. Which jars make the highest pitch? Which is the lowest? The more water there is for the sound waves to move through, the lower the pitch.
2. Making a Volcano – this experiment is great for doing in the sandpit! Make a ‘mountain’ out of sand or playdough, with a hollow in the top. Put baking soda into the hollow. Pour white vinegar overtop and watch the explosion.
3. Colour Creations – this experiment can be done using paint or food colouring. But it’s even more fun and grown up when using the Blippi My First Science Colour Kit! Mix the primary colours to learn what secondary colours can be made, adding white or black to make tints of these colours too.
4. Seed Germination – find out what it takes for a seed to germinate. Put a seed in an empty yogurt pot, one in a yogurt pot with dry soil, one in a yogurt pot with soil and water. What does the seed need to grow? You can also find out what the seedling needs to grow, putting it in a warm and sunny place, a dark cupboard and under a shady tree.
5. Tornado Maker – use our Tornado Maker to teach your child about what a tornado looks like and how it moves.
6. Bath Bombs – experience the chemical reaction that happens when your bath bomb is in water. You can help your child make a bath bomb by mixing one tablespoon each of citric acid, baking soda and Epsom slat, with two tablespoons of cornstarch. Quickly mix with one teaspoon of water, using the spoon to press down on and stop the reaction with the water and dry mixture. Put into a mould until dry. Then see what happens when it is put into the bath!
7. Sink or Float – introduce density as a science concept by testing objects to see if they sink or float! Use things like pebbles, sticks, spoons, lids or cups to see what happens in water. Great for little ones when you are giving them a bath, or for older kids to do in the sink where they can give their hypothesis on what will happen.
