Halloween in New Zealand
Discover everything you need to know about Halloween in New Zealand, including costumes,
food, trick or treating and other spooky events!
It may not have originated here, but Halloween in New Zealand is alive and well! Early October we
start to get a tingly feeling of anticipation in knowing that on the 31st, the ghouls and goblins will be
out and about. Most of us think of trick or treating when it comes to Halloween, but there is so much
more fun to be had and we’re here to prove it!
Everything You Need to Know About Halloween in New
Halloween dates back over 2000 years to a festival that was called Samhain. Originally known as All
Hallow Even, it is the evening before All Hallows Day, and it was believed that during this evening
ghosts of the dead could return to earth to find a new body to possess for the coming year. Naturally
no one wanted to be possessed, so they dressed up in weird clothing and went around their homes
being basically naughty!
Halloween in New Zealand today, however, sees both adults and children dressing in costumes to
attend themed parties or go trick or treating. The great news is that kids have so many Halloween
costumes they can wear, from traditional witches to a fighter pilot or a rainbow fairy!
As Halloween in New Zealand is not celebrated by all, it’s not the best idea to rock up to any house to demand candy. You are likely to find organised trick or treat trails around where you live, with
specific homes to visit. Or there may be a party organised by a local community group or church,
which are often called light parties.
Finding Halloween decorations and costumes online is easy with Kidzstuffonline, . Food gets a
little bit trickier, but we’re up to the challenge. Fairy bread is always a favourite at parties, and you
can fill little cups with chocolate mud and worms, otherwise known as chocolate mouse and jelly
worms, as one treat. Then there’s Mummies (sausages wrapped in pastry strips), meringue ghosts
and spider cupcakes - or at least normal cupcakes with a spider design piped on top if you want to boring!
Like with many special events, social media is where you are most likely to learn about Halloween
trails and kids’ parties. But you can also host your own just for your family or a few friends. It’s a
great occasion to dress up, eat lots of junk food and spend time enjoying one another’s company!
